Club Profile

Dartford Volleyball Club is a successful friendly team consisting of 3 squads, a men's National League team, a mixed Kent 1st Division team and a Kent Ladies Team.  We have a strong number of players with a wide range of age and ability who train every Wednesday night at 8pm - 10pm at Acacia Sports Hall, Dartford.

Dartford started life as an amalgamation of three separate clubs, Wellcome, Pharmax (both pharmaceutical firms) and St.Vincents Roman Catholic Church.   Each team was finding it difficult to put out a full squad, so the decision was taken to merge all three and enter the Kent League Division 1 1985/86 season  as “Wellcome”, as they had the majority of the players as well as business sponsorship.

In the following years, players joined from various sources including, Fire Brigade players, members of “Scorchers” (an army team who had disbanded due to the closure of the hospital) and “Buskers” a team struggling for survival.

Now playing as Dartford Volleyball Club, Chairman Graham Kirrage is proud to detail the following honours under our belt:

7/04/06 National League volleyball finished for 2005/2006 season

Not an excellent season for the Nat league team. But many new faces have come in and we are all looking forward to next years challenge...

18/10/04 National League volleyball

Just a quick note to keep everyone up to date on what is happening. It was a crazy weekend for the Men's National League side fitting in two fixtures on Sunday 17th as well as competing in a friendly against a ex-malory/ex england players on the Saturday mixed in with two great players based in Canterbury - Vince (Who we have accomodated in training once before - very strong hitter and blocker) and Alex (a jump and hit like that at 17yrs old is quite frightening)! This match I believe ended with time running out at 2-2. Very enjoyable!

The results and league tables are displayed below from Sunday, where we notched up our 1st National League win (although it should of been two wins out of two - I think a lack of experience at this level made us panic a bit when the tough got going - we'll get 'em next time).

We will be getting a new ball, scoreboard, line flags and scoresheets for all Kent, National League and friendly match days as well as use in training. See you all soon - Chris...

17/08/04 Olympic bikini watching!

Whether you have found yourself watching Olympic Volleyball over the last week or so, admiring the fantastic skills of the world’s best players or maybe just because of the skimpy clothing that some of the players have been wearing while jumping and diving around on the beach, it doesn’t really matter – the coverage all helps raise the profile of the minority sport of Volleyball in this country.

Even though Great Britain’s Volleyball Team or beach partners are not being represented in Athens this year, it has still managed to reach the headlines of our national tabloids by claiming something along the lines of: Bad news - not many medals won by Great Britain yet, Good news - There is still lots of women’s beach volleyball to watch!  Even some of the TV presenters have been getting hot under the collar!

Seeing such minority sports being played along side some of the nation’s favourite sports, every day on television for a full 16 days, can really inspire people to take a strong interest in a sport that they would not normally consider.  This profile can really help local clubs and local leagues develop.  Therefore it is very encouraging to see that the BBC’s Olympic coverage and website is incredibly proactive in detailing beginners guides, rules, world rankings and even how to get playing (or participating) in your local area.

Dartford Volleyball Club has already received some e-mails in the last week from beginners who would like to take up Volleyball.   There can be no doubt that this is all credit to the recent coverage and will hopefully increase interest for other minority sports that are not splashed across the papers or hitting our screens on a regular basis.

To get involved in sports like volleyball, visit the BBC Olympic Website: www.bbc.co.uk/olympics and then click on your sport of interest.  Dartford Volleyball Club welcomes men and women beginners to the game as well as established players to feed into various leagues including English National League and Kent County Leagues.

Dartford Men’s first team are embarking on their first season in the English National League this September, with Dartford Ladies first team hoping to defend their last seasons Kent league victory.  For more information about Dartford Volleyball Club go to www.dartfordvolleyballclub.co.uk or e-mail Chris at info@dartfordvolleyballclub.co.uk

28/04/04 Kent Volleyball Club Goes National - Dartford

Dartford Volleyball Club Men’s Team have been accepted into the National Volleyball League for Season 2004/05, ending a successful twelve year history in the Kent League.  The news came from the English Volleyball Association (EVA) just days after Dartford’s mixed volleyball team and Dartford Ladies both booked their place into the Kent Cup Finals day in their respective groups.

Dartford men’s team will now play the likes of Guildford International and Tower Hamlets Lynx in seven hour triangular sessions in their new division, playing their home games at Acacia Sports Hall on Dartford High Street.

Success is well deserved for the club, as players, EVA trained coaches and Kent Children’s University Tutors rigorously develop volleyball within the local community, running sessions in schools as well as coaching the Bexley Association of Turkish Speakers (BATS) Volleyball Club every Tuesday night - Dartford’s opponents on finals day!!!

If you are interested in playing volleyball at every level from local to national league or would like volleyball sessions run in your school/club, Dartford would like to hear from you. Dartford are also in search of potential sponsorship to cover extra costs involved in being part of the National League which includes extra hall hire, upgrade in equipment and costs of top referees.

For all training and coaching enquiries along with details on how to receive Dartford Volleyball Club’s sponsorship pack, please email info@dartfordvolleyballclub.co.uk or visit their website www.dartfordvolleyballclub.co.uk

27/06/03 Dartford Make A Clean Sweep - Kent Volleyball Cup

Dartford's 1st and 2nd team cleaned up at this years Kent Volleyball Cup Finals held at Strood Sports Centre. Team coach and Club Chairman Graham Kirrage was delighted with the double win as Dartford 2 (a mixed team) claimed victory over a strong Crowborough Side with Dartford 1 strongly beating Strood 3-0 on their home turf. This was an excellent consolation for Dartford 1 as they drew with Strood for the title of the Kent Premier League, missing out on top spot by just 1 set!

The summer Pre-Season will be a busy one for Dartford Volleyball Club as they aim to bring volleyball to life in the South East. As well as top Dartford hitter Alan Batmaz developing 2 sister clubs "BATS" (Bexley Association of Turkish Speakers), players hope to introduce the game into schools, welcome new players of all standards and enter a Dartford Women's Team into the Kent League for the new season.

If you would like further information on Dartford VBC or would like them to come into your school, please visit their web-site on www.dartfordvolleyballclub.co.uk or e-mail info@dartfordvolleyballclub.co.uk
